REUBENS LANDEY TIEBREAKS
Soren Sandmann Pedersen scored 3.5 points to
convincingly win the 3 player double round-robin
event serving as the tie-break, qualifying the
winner to a free entry into the BCC Club
Championship! Soren had a +54 to 1736 rating.
Edward Astrachan was 2nd in this event, scoring 2.5 points.
Round 1:
Ed Astrachan vs Gabriel Birzu.
Endgame: Astrachan v Birzu
The position looks "close" . . . Black's rooks look a bit
confined; though Black's h and g pawns might prove
interesting counterplay, especially in time pressure.
Early on, Black had the often-seen a6 - b5 break, with
play on the queenside. Yet, Black never moved his
b-pawn. Ed made the first unforced error (illegal move,
costing +1 minute added to Gabe's clock)
Then, in a time scramble, Black dropped a piece.
White developed connected passers on the king side
and though White dropped a rook at the end of
the game, the connected passers rolled in to give
White a queen, costing black his rook, after
which, Black resigned the game. A very nerve-racking
game for both players. Rather bad luck that the
parings written down before the event, forced
Gabriel to continue playing, though he surely needed
a rest from his harrowing Round 1 loss, Gabe did
not get this break and had to play Soren in Round 2.
Soren won both games with creative, solid play.
Gabriel at that point, withdrew from the event.
